Book Review: The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

9361589Genre: Fantasy, Magical Realism
Publication date: September 13th, 2011
Publisher: Harvill Secker
Pages: 512
Rating: 5/5

Summary:

The circus arrives without warning. No announcements precede it. It is simply there, when yesterday it was not. Within the black-and-white striped canvas tents is an utterly unique experience full of breathtaking amazements. It is called "Le Cirque des Reves," and it is only open at night.

But behind the scenes, a fierce competition is underway--a duel between two young magicians, Celia and Marco, who have been trained since childhood expressly for this purpose by their mercurial instructors. Unbeknownst to them, this is a game in which only one can be left standing, and the circus is but the stage for a remarkable battle of imagination and will. Despite themselves, however, Celia and Marco tumble headfirst into love - a deep, magical love that makes the lights flicker and the room grow warm whenever they so much as brush hands.

True love or not, the game must play out, and the fates of everyone involved, from the cast of extraordinary circus per-formers to the patrons, hang in the balance, suspended as precariously as the daring acrobats overhead.

My review:

"Marco lifts his hand to brush a stray curl away from Celia's face, tucking it behind her ear and stroking her cheek with his fingertips."

In my opinion, The Night Circus is one of those books that demands the reader's complete attention because there are so many informations and details to remember in order to fully understand the story. Also, I took my time reading this book because I wanted to stay in the magical world and in the atmosphere Erin Morgenstern created. It's so entertaining, magical and interesting that you just want to live in it.

I don't read a lot of magical realism books and I was intimidated by this book when I first heard of it last year. I thought that it wasn't for me and that I wouldn't be able to finish it, but now, a year later, this book just made my favourite list and I'm really glad I finally read it and experienced this amazing and magical journey.

I will definitely reread this book in the future because I know that there are some tiny details that I've missed and also because I really really enjoyed reading about all the characters in this book and the plot is amazing overall.

"When all of this is over, no matter which one of us wins, I will not let you go so easily."

I have to admit that the dates are a little confusing. When the story shifts to Bailey and then back to the two main characters, I was kind of lost, but it got easier towards the end so, don't worry.

The romance in this book was a little like the insta-love trope that a lot of readers, including me hate, but surprisingly I find it really really cute and sweet in this novel. I was swooning while reading the scenes when Marco and Celia were together. The love story is just wonderful!

Another thing, I found out that this particular book was written during Nanowrimo and that fact just motivates me to do better and to write a book in 30 days.

Finally, I recommend this book to readers who wants to read something different or something out of their comfort zone. Like I said before, I don't really read Magical Realism, but I still enjoyed reading this, so if you are exploring for new genres, give this book a try.

About the author:
Erin Morgenstern is a writer and a multimedia artist, who describes all her work as "fairy tales in one way or another." She grew up in Marshfield, Massachusetts. She currently lives in Boston, Massachusetts with two very fluffy cats.

Breaking A Legend (Kavanagh Legends #1) by Sarah Robinson

Genre: Contemporary Romance
Publication date: September 29th, 2015
Read: July 2015
Publisher: Loveswept
Pages: Kindle Edition
Rating: 3.75/5

Summary:
As one of the big names at his family’s gym, Legends, MMA star Rory Kavanagh is used to being in the spotlight—until a gruesome leg injury knocks him out of the cage. Rory is left feeling sidelined in more ways than one, battling the inner demons that come with losing the one shot at his dreams. Then Clare walks into his life and gives him a new dream: winning her heart. There aren’t many new faces in Woodlawn these days, but this tough, beautiful stranger makes Rory want to get his life back into fighting shape.

Clare Ivers doesn’t think she’ll be able to tell anyone what really brought her to the close-knit Bronx neighborhood where she just started bartending. But her life’s on pause and her past is catching up fast, try as she might to move on—with new friends, steady work, and a chiseled alpha male trying to get her attention. Even though Rory’s more than a little intense, she can’t deny that her heart beats faster when he looks at her with those soulful silver eyes. Clare thought she was done with love, but Rory might just be man enough to show her she thought wrong.

Includes a special message from the editor, as well as an excerpt from another Loveswept title.

For 18+ years of age.

My review:

  *An ARC provided by Netgalley*
If her past had taught her anything. It was that men took what they wanted and left once they had it.

Clare intrigued me since the beginning of this book. I knew she went through a lot in her past with losing her parents at such a young age and her horrible life with her ex-boyfriend. What she had gone through with her ex- wasn't really clear and I really wanted to know what exactly happened and why it did. I enjoyed reading her character because she was a strong woman and she didn't annoy me.

I also enjoyed meeting Rory in this book. I loved reading about what happened to him and how his injury affected his life. Also, I completely adore his family. The Kavanaghs' are one of the best families I've ever read. They care so much for each other and they support and help one another which is simply amazing.

The secondary characters were all great. Casey was one of the best characters in this book with Kane and Ace. Casey was very mysterious in my opinion. She makes me want to know more about her personal life. I don't know if she's going to have her story to tell, but I hope she does because I would love to read it. I also want a book for Kane Kavanagh because I loved him as much.

Another thing I really liked about this book was how the characters cared about animals.

This was an awesome read. I had a few problems with the romance at some scenes, but overall it was a good book and I recommend it to readers who love contemporary romance.

Weekly Wrap-Up!

1. P.S. I Still Love You by Jenny Han

I gave this book a 5/5 stars!!!!!!
It was really good. I enjoyed it as much as I enjoyed the first book (To All The Boys I've Loved Before)  If you want to read my review on the first book click here --> REVIEW

I couldn't ask for a better ending of this duology. I'm not entirely sure if it's a two books series, but if Ms. Jenny Han decides to write another book, I would be delighted to read it.

Totally recommend it to everyone who loved the first book and to all readers who love YA contemporary romances.

2. When You're Back by Abbi Glines

I gave this book a 2/5 stars.

This is the first Abbi Glines book that I didn't enjoy reading. I've always loved her books, but this one annoyed the crap out of me. *sorry for the language*

I felt like it's always the same pattern in her last couple of books in this series and I'm a little annoyed because I wanted to read something different and not always the same things all over and over again.

I really hope her next book will be better and different from the others.

Veiled Obsession by Dori Lavelle

Veiled Obsession (His Agenda 1)Veiled Obsession by Dori Lavelle
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

My reaction when I first read the summary of this book.
I was really intrigued and I couldn't wait to read it. I received an ARC, but then I couldn't find it on my kindle app. So that was annoying.

I bought it so no worries ;D

Anyways, let's start with the actual book review shall we?

I read this in just a few hours so that really means a lot. I don't really know how to rate this book or how to describe how I felt throughout the whole story because in the beginning I was totally intrigued then scared, disgusted, scared, disgusted and so on.

In the beginning I didn't know how he can be such a bad guy because he was actually really nice and fine. The kissing scenes and how he treated her in the beginning got my heart beating like

Then Haley realized that she married a total stranger and she's going to have to deal with it for the rest of her life. Jude's personality changed and I was totally disgusted by his acts. Totally DISGUSTED!

He's so cruel and I was literally scared. I really felt like I was in Haley's place and I was living with that monster. For the most part, I was disgusted and scared for Haley. I wanted to cry at some point because of how Jude was hurting her.

description

This was like a roller coaster ride.I felt all kinds of emotions. I've never read anything like this before.

You're probably wondering if I liked it or not... Well let me tell you this...

OF COUUUUUUUUUUUURSE I LOVED IT! Well, not Jude and definitely not the whole abuse theme, but the writing and the emotions it made me feel was pretty impressive. It's hard to write something and make readers feel connected to the story and the characters. So I'm pretty satisfied with Dori Lavelle's work and I can't wait for more!

Entice (Heart of Stone #2) by Veronica Larsen

Genre: Romance
Publication date: May 25th, 2015
Read: May 2015
Rating: 5/5

Summary:
Coming soon!
A story of reconciling the past with the present in order to glean new beginnings. Entice is a sexy, humorous, second-chance love story.

Turns out I’ve been faking being an adult.
My job? My apartment? The pretty life I've built?

Let's just say I've made some mistakes.

I'm knee-deep in the mess I've made when I find him. Tall, dark-haired, and rough around the edges. The boy I never noticed is all grown up, in all the right ways. And he's not about to let me forget it.

He can try to pretend he's immune to our attraction. I'm trained in the art of persuasion and I love a challenge.

But how can he know the answers to questions I haven't thought to ask? I’ve been putting out fires, fighting like crazy to get my life back on track. And this man? He acts like he knows who's holding the match.

Maybe there's no such thing as mistakes.
What if it's all just sabotage?

Entice can be read as a standalone, but contains major spoilers to Entangle.

My review:

Received an ARC of this book from the author herself.

This book was two times better than the first book! Don’t get me wrong, I loved the first book, but I enjoyed Emily’s story even more.

This is probably one of the books  I’ve read in the “romance” genre where  the two main characters (man and woman) saw each other again after years of being apart and they’re not obsessed with each other.

For example, it wasn’t like “I never stopped loving her, she’s the only woman I’ve ever loved, I can’t live without her…” and the girl would be like, “He’s the most beautiful person I ever saw, I’m nothing without him.” I’m probably exaggerating, but you know what I mean.

It wasn’t cheesy, which was AWESOME and refreshing. They say the right things at the right time. There are romance novels that are really unrealistic, but I try to not pay attention very much and just focus more on the story instead of the couple’s sweet/romantic dialogs. I’m getting tired of men who are playboys in the beginning and suddenly they see this beautiful girl and they start changing right away. That’s not very realistic and I’m starting to not like it. *oups*

Anyway, back to Entice…

“I wanted you. You were all I could think about.”

The story focuses more on Emily and Owen. I thought I would learn more about Lex’s and Emily’s mom, but nope. It doesn’t really bother me, I just thought I would get more info on their family issue.

I loved how Emily doesn’t remember Owen at first and I really enjoyed reading the parts when she started flirting with him. It was very entertaining it made me laugh a few times.

I also liked the fact that it took Owen a little while until he started to show how he really felt about Emily.

There are more things in this book that I really loved and that made me crush on Owen, but I don’t want to spoil you guys!!!

I’d like to add that you should expect to read really HOT SCENES GUYS! HOT SCENES!

HOWEVER,
Please tell me there’s another book about Emily because after reading this I was just like… “Whaaaaat? That’s it!?” Her story is far from over and if there’s more, I’ll buy it without a doubt! If not, I’m writing an ending for them because the end is just unacceptable, it can't end that way!

Release Blitz #4 : Forbidden Nights by Lauren Blakely

Summary:

She has been the star of his dirty dreams for years.
Sexy hotel CEO Nate Harper has lusted after his good friend Casey Sullivan for a long time, and she’s cried out his name in pleasure countless times in his fabulously filthy fantasies. But even though he’s quite skilled at pleasing a woman, he won’t act on his intense desire because he knows he’s no good for her. After the kind of hurt his ex inflicted on him, he’s a committed playboy for life, and Casey only wants true love.
All that changes one hot night when she comes to him with a proposition he can’t resist — she wants him to teach her to be submissive in the bedroom. Casey soon learns how very much she likes letting go of control to him. She’s never been more turned on in her life than she is in Nate’s arms. And he’s never been more taken by a woman.
The only trouble is as she experiences what it means to let go, he starts to experience what it means to feel again…And the lessons in seduction threaten to turn into so much more than either one bargained for…
What happens when years of desire and lust ignite a passion that can’t be denied?

Excerpt:
As soon as Bryan and Kat left, Nate shut the door, then locked it. She glanced quickly behind her at the window that provided a view of the sea of rabid fans. The stadium shook with excitement. Cheers from the crowd vibrated throughout the house of Ruth. Nate stalked down the three steps separating them. When he reached her, a vein twitched in his neck. His mouth was a ruler-straight line. His jaw was set hard. His stare undressed her.
“I was wrong,” he said. Each word possessed a hard edge.
“Wrong about what?” Was he talking about the dress? Or about wanting to be her teacher? God, she prayed he wasn’t backing out.
“I was wrong about tonight’s lesson. It’s not spanking.”
“What is it?”
“It’s role-playing.” His voice was hot and rough. His dark eyes prowled over her body.
“What kind of role playing?” She didn’t even bother to hide her nerves, but the  nerves also excited her. Or maybe he was simply the one who excited her. It seemed whatever he did turned her on. The fact that he was standing here, a solid mass of muscle and strength, of extreme and utter sexiness, sent shivers across her skin. She drank him in: the wavy mess of his golden brown hair, the stubble lining his jaw, the exposed patch of skin on his chest where the top two buttons of his white shirt were undone. All of it, all of him, made her tremble with want.
He took one step closer, and reflexively she backed up so her spine hit the wall behind her. She was caged in, and against her better judgment, she liked it. She liked the fact that it was starkly quiet inside the suite, and that it was intensely noisy outside, a white noise that masked all that she was feeling.
“I’m going to be playing the role of the jealous lover,” he said, his voice still laced with the same frustration she’d picked up on earlier. Was he annoyed with her?
“What do you mean?”
“I’m the jealous lover who can’t stand the thought of his woman wearing a gorgeous, stunning, absolutely fucking breathtaking dress on a date with another man.”
A wild thrill rushed through her veins from his words and what they meant. “But I thought you didn’t like the dress?” she asked, coyly, playing along.
He lifted his hand and brushed the tips of his fingers against her wrist. She shuddered from that one subtle touch. Her body begged for more, and she was almost ashamed at how much desire flowed through her bloodstream right now. She hadn’t been completely aware of how very much she had wanted to see him tonight, of how truly disappointed she had been for the first eight innings that he wasn’t here by her side. Now that he was here, she wasn’t sure how she’d survived the game without him.
He brushed his fingers along her arm, across the crook of her elbow, and up to her shoulder. Goosebumps rose in his wake.
“I don’t like the dress if you wear it for another man,” he said, keeping his eyes locked on hers the whole time. “And sometimes that means I’m going to act like a dick and tell you I don’t like the dress at all.” He brought his hands to her hair and she wanted to cry out because it felt so fucking good to be touched by him like this, with hands that were both tender and completely possessive. He speared his fingers into her hair. “But what I really don’t like is the idea that another man might look at you in it, and want to touch you the way I touch you.”
He leaned into her neck, and pressed his lips against her skin. There was nothing gentle in the kiss. His lips were hot and angry, and she felt his teeth nip her skin. A sting of pain raced through her, but it was a good pain, a pain that made her long for more.

Message from the author:
I'm so thrilled that the Seductive Nights erotic romance series is continuing with a new installment starring a new couple! This series has been such a joy to write since it started as a fan-driven series, with Julia and Clay, and then Jack and Michelle, and now this this new novel is about Nate and Casey. Readers requested that I write their story next, so I did! FORBIDDEN NIGHTS can be read without having read the earlier books.
(Though, why wouldn't you want to meet the other couples?!)
I can't wait to introduce readers to Nate Harper and Casey Sullivan. They’re a dynamic duo and many early readers are saying this is their favorite story yet! Nate knows exactly who, and what he wants, and is thrilled when the opportunity he’s dreamed about for years presents herself to him. Expect many steamy encounters between these two!

Review: The Commitment Test(The Marin Test #2) by Amanda Aksel

Genre: Women Fiction/Romance
Publication date: February 4th, 2015
Publisher: Elephantine Publishing
Read: January 2015
Pages: 300
Rating: 5/5

Summary:
When a Valentine’s Day proposal doesn’t come with an engagement ring, Marin Johns begins to wonder if she and James will ever get married. As her closest friends begin to move forward with their lives, she refuses to be left behind.

Hope is restored as she devises a plan to get James down on one knee by becoming the ideal mate. Everything seems to fall into place until her college boyfriend resurfaces after a decade with his own ideas about their future. Will Marin be forced to choose between the man of her dreams and the diamond ring she’s always dreamed of?

My review:

Book 2 didn't disappoint me. I just couldn't stop reading it, I read it in one day. It was funny, cute, flattering again. What more can I ask for? This book has it all.

"The rest are gonna love you because I love you"
James Young is the kind of guy every woman wants. He's loyal, handsome, nice, romantic, caring, understanding... the list goes on.

"Love means taking a chance even if you're afraid. I will always be afraid to lose you, but I won't push you away anymore. I promise."
Marin could get really frustrating because of the decisions she made. At some point I forgot she was a couple therapist because she was really confused about this love/commitment thing. However I understood her and can relate to her in a way. I'm still young to marry anyone and I'm not planning on marrying anytime soon but I want to get married one day. I understood why getting married was a big deal for her even though I think she took the whole situation too far and started doubting her love for James. She was crazy at times but I guess love could do that to you.

"But no matter who's looking for me, I'll be looking to see you."
Once again the secondary characters were the best! They gave really good advice and I learned so much about love, life, relationships just by reading these two books. Holly was awesome and Marin did mention she was her best friend but Holly wasn't really around a lot, even in Book 1. I think Telly and Marin were closer and I loved their friendship. Telly was so funny and I love how careless she was and how she just wanted to have fun.

"You're my heart, you're my home, you're my one and only."
The thing is I couldn't stop reading until I find out what comes next. There wasn't a moment in this book where I was bored. I think everything was well described, there was no rush and it didn't leave me with questions at the end. Well except "What happens after their wedding? Will they have a book 3?" I seriously want a book 3. I still want to read more about Marin and of course gorgeous James.

As much as I want to talk about all the sweet and funny scenes, I don't want to spoil you guys. This book was awesome and I'm really hoping to re-read both books one day. I really want a book 3 because I fell in love with the characters a lot but if not, I'm seriously going to miss all of them.

Will her new "boyfriend" beat the statistic or will Marin regret the satisfaction of being right?

My review:

Received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review
When I first started reading I thought the book was okay. Nothing big was happening except the part where Marin caught her fiancé cheating on her. I had to stop reading several times due to the number of school work I had to do. But damn this book was amazing!

"A book full of sweetness, you'll fall in love with James's character no doubt."

I never expected to love this book as much as I love it right now. The main character Marin caught her fiancé cheating and it nearly destroyed her. When she started reading this particular book telling her all men were liars, she was so desperate to prove everyone that what the book was saying was true. So when she met James, she started to do this Man Test on him which was ridiculous and also cruel if you ask me. I kind of knew James was a great guy since the first time he was mentioned in the book and he didn't deserve that kind of treatment.

When he and Marin started dating I was afraid to read how things would end. James was so charming and so sweet and I fell in love with him right away so I didn't want him to be heart broken. Throughout this Man Test process I really despise Marin. I know many men cheats and lies but it doesn't mean they all do and I was waiting until Marin realizes that. I did understood why she was doing it but I wasn't necessarily on her side.

Other than James and Marin, they were a lot of characters I really liked. Rachel, Holly, Telly and even Andy were such good friends with Marin and I loved how they cared, understood and forgave each other. Marin's family was great. I didn't really think I would read about her family because she didn't really talked about them a lot in the beginning and her brother Michael didn't seem like he wanted to spend time with his sister.

This is a contemporary romance novel where characters are in their early thirties. I recommend this to anyone who loves romance. This isn't like an Erotic novel. There are some sex scenes but they aren't described explicitly so for those who are worried there might be scenes that are described explicitly, you don't have to worry for this one.

There are a ton of flattering scenes that'll make you swoon and squeak but you can't really blame James for being such a sweetheart. This book deserves a 5 star rating.
